Putting a face on your truck

A truck can say a lot about its driver.

That’s why for many, standard options won’t do. They need customization, whether for practical use or for aesthetics.

A year ago, Don McIntee saw that there was room for another truck accessory business in the expanding Queen City. Retired for a year from Capital, McIntee decided to try the retail side of the automotive industry. He thought he’d see how his business would work for a month in the Northgate Mall.

Sunface Truck Accessories started well and slowly grew. McIntee’s son Scott became a co-owner in November of 2007 and the business is looking to the future.

“When we started out, we were concentrating mainly on stainless steel step bars and a billet grill inset that we actually purchased directly from the factory,” said McIntee. “Then we expanded. Most people still come in after the shiny stuff - the ‘bling.’ But we sell a lot of truck box covers as well.”

Sunface will order parts, but usually doesn’t have to, as they have most accessories in stock. Many of their customers are rural, which lets them come in and get what they need in just a day.

“If a person came in and wanted a huge front bumper for wildlife protection, we’d have that in stock,” said McIntee.

McIntee also owns and operates Grilz Distributors in conjunction with Sunface. With over 60 suppliers, customers can find almost anything they’re looking for. And whatever your preference - Chevy, Chrysler, Dodge, Ford, GMC, or even the imports, Honda, Nissan, or Toyota - your truck can be decked out to your choosing.

“We sell mud flaps without any stainless steel on them, mud flaps with stainless steel, and then mud flaps with stainless steel and the emblem, which we definitely sell more of,” said McIntee.

Many drivers are loyal to their brand and accessorizing can show off either your horns or your blue signature to the prominence you desire.

McIntee said they’re starting to accessorize more imports, although Canadians still primarily buy domestic trucks.

If you want to see what accessorizing can do, Sunface has a tricked-out truck in the store. They also have a 50 inch TV and DVD player to show the various products offered.

Often McIntee said people walking by the store in the mall will stop in to see what they have. When McIntee started, he wasn’t sure about the mall idea, but he’s found it to be a benefit.

“At Christmas time, I had so many people walking by who would come in and say that they would never have thought of something like this as a gift,” said McIntee. “People got gifts of door handles or mirror covers.”

April was an equally busy month for Sunface, and May should be no different with the anniversary celebration. McIntee likes to see this more as a birthday celebration than an anniversary.

And customers will celebrate when they buy from Sunface, as throughout May Sunface will pay the tax on all purchases. Jack FM will be on remote location at Sunface today from 3 pm to 6 pm, and special deals and promotions will continue all week.

And like always, Sunface is open convenient hours for anyone to find time to come down for whatever they need.
