What You Can Expect from GM’s OnStar Generation 7 System

GM’s OnStar service is entering its seventh generation and the service includes a lot more features than it did ten years ago when systems were installed as a dealer option.GM says more than 60 percent of its 2007 vehicles will have OnStar as standard equipment. By the 2008 model year nearly every GM vehicle sold to a retail customer will be OnStar equipped.

OnStar Services

OnStar Turn-by-Turn Navigation: New for 2007, OnStar Turn-by-Turn Navigation is a fully integrated GPS navigation system. Press the blue OnStar button and tell the advisor where you want to go. Directions are sent to the vehicle and a voice is routed through the vehicle’s speakers to direct you to your destination.Related features are coming, including information about local retailers that sell E85 fuel.

OnStar Vehicle Diagnostics: This service runs checks on your vehicle’s key operating systems, collects maintenance and service information and summarizes the info in a monthly Email sent directly to you.

If a check engine light comes on while you’re on the road, push the blue OnStar button and ask the advisor to run a diagnostics report.

The report reveals the cause of the problem and tells you what you should do next.

Advanced Automatic Crash Notification: The OnStar system senses and automatically calls an OnStar advisor if your vehicle is involved in certain types of frontal, rear or side-impact crashes, regardless of air bag deployment. The system sends crash severity details to an OnStar advisor, who can relay it to emergency services

OnStar Hands-Free Calling: OnStar offers voice-activated, hands-free calling from a system that is integrated into your vehicle.

Stolen Vehicles: OnStar’s GPS system can help locate a stolen vehicle.

Remove Door Unlocking: An OnStar advisor can unlock doors in vehicles equipped with power locks.

The basic OnStar package is free for one year after buying your vehicle. Two more enhanced service packages are available at an additional cost.
